Intragastric balloons provide a safe, non-surgical alternative to weight loss surgery and have been used worldwide since 1993. More than 100,000 people have lost weight with the assistance of various models of gastric balloons.
We know that individuals initially lose an average of 16-25 Kg with the Spatz Adjustable Intragastric Balloon. And that’s great. The Spatz3 Adjustable Intragastric Balloon is approved for 12 full months of implantation and is fully adjustable. These features can lead to greater weight loss than other gastric balloons.
We were curious whether individuals were able to maintain their weight loss a year or even two years after their Spatz Adjustable Intragastric Balloons were removed. We used a medically significant measure of success. Medical experts agree that losing and maintaining more than 10% of initial weight results in medically significant improvements in illnesses, such as diabetes and hypertension, that are caused by obesity. It’s also enough weight loss to allow patients to reduce their need for medications to treat these conditions.
In other words, we were interested to find out if patients maintained a loss of at least 10% of their initial weight. As an example, if a patient weighed 100 Kg when the gastric balloon was implanted, and maintained at least a 10 Kg loss once the balloon was removed, that’s considered medically significant weight loss success.
Our results were very encouraging. Of a group of 79 patients who had a Spatz balloon implanted as a non-invasive tool for weight loss, 75.7% of patients maintained a greater than 10% weight loss one full year after the Spatz Intragastric Balloon was removed. Two years after balloon removal, 76.4% of patients succeeded in maintaining greater than 10% weight loss.
Dr. Jeffrey Brooks, Founder and CEO of Spatz FGIA, Inc., remarked, “We are genuinely encouraged by these results. Maintenance of weight loss is an important measure of our patients’ success. The Spatz Intragastric Balloon is both fully adjustable and approved for twice as long an implantation period as other gastric balloons on the market. These data provide clinical evidence that the Spatz Intragastric Balloon also offers more effective long term results than its competitors.”
Naturally, your individual motivation and willingness to comply with dietary changes and behavior modification are important factors in your ultimate success with the Spatz3 Adjustable Balloon. But with proper motivation and behavioral changes, the Spatz3 Adjustable Gastric Balloon can help you lose weight, and keep it off long term. That’s great news!
