Water Aerobics – Yes You Can!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you avoid exercise because of joint pain, imagine exercising without pain. This is entirely possible when you join a water exercise class. When your body is mostly or entirely under water, you can participate fully and do things you could never do on land. Even jumping jacks and running!

In addition, when you exercise in the water, you create resistance up to 12 times greater than if you did the same movements on land. That means your muscles work plenty, but you don’t feel the exertion the way you do on land.

Depending on your area, water-based exercise classes might be called aqua Zumba, water yoga, aqua aerobics, aqua cycling or aqua jog. Classes typically last about an hour. With lots of variety in the activities, and often with accompanying music, the time passes quickly.

Since the water is supporting your body while you exercise, it’s much safer than exercising on land. You joints won’t feel the pressure of gravity and that can result in a much safer workout. In addition, since water-based exercise classes are done in relatively shallow water, you don’t have to know how to swim to participate.

Any concerns about exercising in a swimming suit can be allayed by wearing a modest swim suit that covers what you want to cover. HydroChic, ModLi and MarSea Modest are just a few companies that sell modest swimwear up to size 4X. Some offer free worldwide shipping.

Because gravity is not a factor, water exercise is especially great for people who are older, have arthritis or are  overweight. Water aerobics is also the perfect companion exercise for those with a Spatz3 adjustable gastric balloon.
