Exercises For My Gastric Balloon: Part 3 – Yoga

Reading Time: 4 minutes

In Part 2 of our series Exercises For My Gastric Balloon, we started to discuss more moderately intense workouts such as strength training. Over the last month, we hope you’ve enjoyed the addition of strength training to your daily or weekly exercise routine. With you entering the third month of your Spatz3 weight loss balloon treatment, you are now able to slightly raise your workout intensity level, starting with Yoga.

According to Hopkins Medicine, Yoga is super beneficial for your health in so many different ways. First, Yoga has been shown to improve your balance, strength, and overall flexibility. Additionally, Yoga can benefit back pain, lessen one’s arthritis symptoms, help your cardiovascular health, improve your sleep, and even brighten your mood if you’re feeling down!

In Part 3 of our Exercises For My Gastric Balloon series, we’ll discuss how you can begin adding Yoga into your workout routine. Let’s dive right in!

Yoga and Your Weight Loss Program

Yoga is so much more than just an exercise. It’s a way to create a union between your body, mind, and spirit. If this sounds too “Yogi” for you, we completely understand. At first, it did for us too. However, when you think about it, the breathing and stretching techniques found in Yoga can be used as a path towards mindfulness and meditation – a trend that has been growing in recent years.

We’re going to lay out a few steps that will help introduce Yoga into your lifestyle:

Acceptance

As we mentioned, Yoga is much more than just an exercise, and part of the journey begins with accepting your body, mind, and soul for what they are in the moment. When you step onto your mat, appreciate everything that you are experiencing in that moment, and live in that moment as you begin your Yoga routine.

Let Go of Your Expectations

One of the most common themes of Yoga is gratitude. When you begin to feel and experience tru gratitude, your expectation for what you can be doing fade away, and you are left with a joyful feeling of being grateful for everything you have in the moment. As you begin your Yoga journey, remember that the mental exercise is just as important as the physical exercise.

Focus On The Core

While you may want to jump right into a headstand, the core of Yoga is not about being able to do the physically difficult poses, rather it’s about finding inner strength through breathing, meditation, and freedom in the body. Try to take your mind away from the goal to bend over backwards, and begin to focus on the reason you started Yoga, to align your body, mind, and spirit.

Breathing

Breath is a big deal when it comes to Yoga. However, as important as breath may be, the awareness of your breathing is actually what’s so important. The practice of becoming more aware of your breath can even lead to better sleep and reduced stress. So, when you’re struggling with a few poses, remember that being aware of your breath is your number one focus.

Learn To Be Still

Yoga for Weight Loss

Another one of the main tenets of Yoga is the ability to live in the moment, even if the moment is still. Throughout our daily lives, there is always this need to be moving from one thing to the next. When it comes to Yoga, before trying all these challenging poses, try and focus on poses in which you remain still; learn to live in that moment, and you’ll find this newfound ability to reduce your stress throughout the day.

Start Simple

Most of what we’ve mentioned at this point has been related to the mental side of Yoga, it’s time to get into the physical poses! Start by searching for beginner Yoga videos on YouTube, or find an online Yoga studio that offers beginner classes. You’ll most likely start with poses such as downward-dog, tree, child’s pose, and savasana. Remember, focus on your breath and feeling the stretch in every inch of your body.

Find a Class

While online videos are great for beginners, the best way to truly master Yoga is by learning from an experienced instructor. Start by trying to find a local yoga studio near your home and ask about beginner’s classes. Often, we can be nervous to start new adventures, so don’t feel embarrassed to go introduce yourself to the instructor and let them know that you’re just starting your journey with Yoga; we’re almost certain they’ll take you under their wing and help get you started!
