Your Spatz3 journey begins here

    The consultation

Your journey to weight loss with Spatz3 Gastric Balloon begins with a consultation. During your appointment, your doctor will review your medical history and perform an easy physical exam to determine if this weight loss treatment is right for you. Next, you will have a chat about the balloon treatment. Your doctor will address the benefits and risks of the balloon and any alternative weight loss options.

  • A tip from the doctor

It’s important that you understand how a gastric balloon works so that you can maximize its benefits and reach your weight loss and health goals. You will discuss these goals, as well as your eating habits and health concerns with your doctor and your dietician.

    Preparing for a successful pre-procedure

In order to ensure a safe and effective procedure, your doctor will conduct certain pre-screening assessments. Pre-screening assessments may include any or all of the following; a). a review of your personal, medical, and health-related information; b) a dietary evaluation; c) blood tests; d) chest X-ray and ECG (depending on your age).

    The procedure

Having your balloon fitted is quick, simple, and safe. Your gastric balloon is inserted endoscopically, meaning a thin tube is passed into your body through your mouth. This is a 15-minute out-patient procedure performed while you are under conscious sedation – you will be asleep during the procedure and will awaken a short time after. This is a completely non-surgical procedure, so there are no incisions involved. Once safely placed in your stomach, your balloon is then inflated with a saline solution. You will stay with us for about an hour after your balloon has been fitted so we can make sure you have fully recovered from your sedation and are ready to go home.

    The post-procedure experience

For the first few days after your procedure, most patients will feel some degree of nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and/or abdominal discomfort. This is natural and expected, and is a sign that your balloon is starting to work. Usually, these symptoms last three to four days and will resolve in about a week’s time, but, in rare cases, symptoms may persist for longer. Your doctor will prescribe medications to reduce these side effects, but you should expect some degree of symptoms. Once the balloon is implanted, you will be limited to a liquid-only diet for several days to allow your body to acclimate. With time, you will then gradually move on to a soft diet food, and within about two weeks, you should be back to eating solid meals.

  • A tip from the doctor

As noted, your doctor will prescribe medications to help alleviate side effects of the balloon implantation. In order to best manage unwanted side effects, please purchase your medications prior to the procedure day; the symptoms usually begin hours after the procedure, so it is recommended that you take your medication before you start to actually feel sick.

    The adjustment

What makes the Spatz3 balloon unique is its adjustable size. So, if you are feeling constantly sick or have ongoing pain, your balloon can be made smaller with another 15-minute endoscopy to help relieve your symptoms. If after four to five months you stop losing weight, the volume of your balloon can be increased with another adjustment. This will help to kick-start another round of weight loss and push your results past the plateau. Prior to an adjustment procedure, you will be instructed to start a liquid diet for three days before the procedure, and then fast from midnight the night before. Just like the first procedure, your adjustments will be non-surgical. You will be under conscious sedation, and you will be in and out within an hour.

    Removing the Spatz3 balloon

When it’s time for your treatment to end, you’ll have another endoscopy procedure to remove your balloon. To prepare for this, you’ll need to be on a liquid diet for three days before, and then fast from midnight the night before. Just like the first procedure and your adjustment, the balloon removal will be non-surgical. You’ll be under conscious sedation, and you’ll be in and out within an hour. Once your balloon has been removed, you’ll be all set to continue your life feeling happier, healthier, and more confident.
